What is coaching?

The International Coaching Federation defines coaching as partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential. The process of coaching often unlocks previously untapped sources of imagination, productivity and leadership.

Why do I need a coach?

Great question. Most people don’t need a coach, but working with one has tremendous advantages. A good coach is a “thinking partner” who will encourage and challenge you, and help you be accountable to yourself, which increases the likelihood you’ll be successful at whatever you’re trying to accomplish through coaching.

Are all coaches the same?

No. There are many types of coaches with varying levels of coaching experience and training. Generally speaking, a good coach listens well, maintains boundaries and confidentiality, avoids making assumptions and allows you to set the coaching agenda. Coaches who give unsolicited advice, talk too much about themselves, or promise results before getting to know you should be avoided. Look for a coach who is a member of the International Coaching Federation (ICF) or another legitimate professional association. These coaches have completed training in an approved program and agree to operate by the association’s code of ethics and standards.

Can coaching build confidence?

Absolutely. Achieving goals and improving your life can boost confidence and self-esteem, and coaching can help. In my experience, self-compassion is equally valuable and is something I incorporate into my coaching practice. Being able to show up for yourself at all times, and not just when you are at your peak, is important.

How do you work with clients?

Every client is unique, so I don’t have a one-size-fits-all approach. We start by getting to know each other and talking about what you want to work on. I offer a FREE, 30-minute coaching conversation for this reason. From there, we agree on a plan or program with a number of coaching sessions. Sometimes we might use assessments, personality inventories or other tools. If you have used any before (Myers-Briggs, StrengthsFinder, Enneagram, etc) we can utilize your results if you have them.

What type of clients do you serve?

Anyone who is ready to make a commitment to themselves and their future, and is motivated to do the work. However, I specialize in working with people facing life transitions (grief and loss, divorce or retirement, for example) and with clergy/spiritual leaders, non-profit executives, social entrepreneurs and activists. I also offer coaching and spiritual support for the LGBTQIA+ community and their family members/loved ones. I am committed to diversity, equity, inclusion and justice in my work with clients and in the coaching profession.

How do I get started?

If you are new to coaching with me, I offer a free, 30-minute coaching conversation, which you can schedule here. We can get to know each other and determine if working together makes sense for both of us.
